A Message from the Founder
As an adoptive parent of a "special needs" child I was not able to find any programs in the private sector or through the public school system that provided the attention or intensity that I felt my child needed.
Having been educated by Jesuit Brothers at St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia, I have learned to appreciate the value of a good education. The Jesuit Brothers have a vocation to educate the entire person. The curriculum included Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, English, Latin, Greek, German, History, Social Sciences and, of course, Religion. Every night I had homework in each subject. Yes, it was a lot of work but it reinforced what I had learned in class each day. The experience taught me how to persevere in life. In addition to the academics, every student was strongly encouraged to participate in at least one extracurricular activity and to attend the semi-formal dances that were held quarterly to develop social skills and the social graces.
It wasn’t until much later in life, when I became older and wiser, that I learned to appreciate the sacrifices that my parents had to make to be sure that I received the best education that was available. Now, I thank them every day.
When my child had learning challenges, my persistent attitude told me to find a way for her to succeed. I realized that children who learn differently are not served by everyday practices. They need a personalized approach. While "No Child Left Behind" is a noble and admirable concept, early intervention and training during the formative years has proven to be the most effective course of action to achieve this goal.
At Prestige Academy, we are focused on the whole child and have the time to tailor your child’s education for his or her success. Our PEP evaluation will guide us in our plan for your child. Our classes are grouped according to skills. We will include you in our education process so that you will have tools to use at home to reinforce your child’s path to learning. Constant reinforcement of the therapy at home is an integral part of a child’s education and development. Parents will be advised of the techniques that are being used to develop speech, language and fine motor skills so that they will be able to reinforce the therapy at home.
Our approach will be professional but fun for the student. At preschool age, we realize that rigid academics are not geared for a child’s success. Speech therapy and educational therapy take place in the form of game-like activities. In addition to the individual therapy sessions, pre-school academics will be taught as well as the classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes. Social interaction will also be encouraged and monitored.
Not every child is geared towards academics. There are many famous and successful adults who have based their lives on technical skills, like designing computers, becoming famous chefs or even whispering to dogs. With proper training and guidance everyone can become a successful adult in the game of life. Our goal is to help you direct your child toward their natural gifts while helping them with basic skills.
